Hailing from Newport News, VA, Sean Mentis recognized early on that music was his true calling—a means of self-expression and connection with the world. Introduced to FL Studio in 2006, Smoothwaffle’s journey as a producer began, but it wasn’t until 2010 that he took rapping seriously, drawing inspiration from luminaries like 2Pac, Nas, Pharrell, Q-Tip, Quasimoto, Tyler, The Creator, and Kendrick Lamar. His music pulsates with raw emotion and substance, reflecting his unique blend of influences and distinctive style over colorful production. However, Smoothwaffle’s artistry transcends mere music—it’s a reflection of his journey of self-discovery and resilience. Inspired by the struggles and history of the Berlin Wall, he adopted the alias Berlin…! as a symbol of breaking down barriers, both personal and societal. After graduating from Denbigh High School, he would relocate from Virginia to Philly, to pursue his passion for audio production at The Art Institute of Philadelphia, where he honed his craft and immersed himself in the city’s vibrant music scene. For over a decade, Smoothwaffle has thrived in Philly, collaborating with a diverse array of artists such as Rae.Dianz, Reek HellaSmoke, Kause, Illadel, Kagiso, and Sonya’s Son. His versatility as a producer and engineer would solidify his presence in the local scene, showcasing his diversity to push boundaries in genre, defying expectations of traditional hip-hop. As he prepares for the release of his fourth studio project, “TRiUMPH…!”, Smoothwaffle continues to push the envelope, forging connections through his music just as he envisioned at the outset of his journey.
